The Arizona State Chapter of the Antique Studebaker Club

The Presidents Message
By .... Malcolm Stinson

September, 2008

I surely hope that everyone had a good time in Show Low.. I know that I did. I was so pleased that we had around 40 people that went on the tour and visited here at the Studebaker Ranch. We even had several people from as far away as California. It was so neat to have Frank, Kent and Lee from Palm Springs and the President of the Southern California Chapter, Sam and Rhonda Bailey. It was very nice of them to drive so far for our tour.

On Friday afternoon about 35 members met at the Ranch and went to Bob Stoddard's tractor museum. All were very impressed with his collection of antique tractors. Bob had them all lined up for our visit and every one of them was as nice or better than brand new. Bob also showed us several like new and running one cylinder motors. One was from an old Maytag washing machine that women had to start every time they wanted to wash clothes. Many of us had questions and Bob was so good about taking the time to answer all of them. He even showed us a very small engine that he made and ran on hot air. The tour was really neat and those that missed it lost out on a great time.

The tour on Saturday was really neat. Cool temperature, tall pines, good roads and the overlook was awesome. You can see forever. From that point you can see New Mexico. Then the drive on through Eager and on to Alpine was neat. The rustic restaurant was very inviting and the food and service was great. In short, it was one hell of a nice day.

After the tour and burger burn on Saturday, we had a short meeting. The trip to Williams and the Grand Canyon Caverns was decided and it will be around the last week in October. Jon Carter MD., VP and Tour Chairman, has agreed to set this up with motels in Williams and is going to look into the train. I understand that there was some talk about feeling closed in down in the cavern. Let me assure you. No one is more claustrophobic than I am. I cannot even sit in the rear seat of a small car. It is so open in the cavern, that I had no trouble at all. The plan is dinner in Williams Friday night. Grand Canyon Caverns on Saturday and dinner again, then take the train on a Sunday ride. Plus, anything else that Jon comes up with. This is going to be a great weekend and it should be cool by then.

We also decided that it would be great to have a zone meet in Cottonwood and this is to be the first weekend in May. That is May I st, 2nd and 3rd, 2009. Ron and Sherry Watson have offered to be the Zone Meet Chair. They can use any and all the help they can muster up, so please see if there is something you can do to help.

Violet and Mike Borens of Oro Valley, Tucson, have offered to host a holiday party sometime in November or December 2008. There will be more on that in this newsletter. We thank them so much for doing this and if you have not been to their home or have not had any of Violet's cooking, you are in for a real treat.

I do plan to hold a short board meeting and open meeting in Williams on Saturday afternoon or evening. So, if you have something you would like to bring up, please do so.

Jon may be the tour chairman, but he needs all the help of the members. Please volunteer to host a tour and meeting. If you need help in setting up a tour, just ask Jon or me to help you. We will be more than glad to help. There is so much to see and do here in Arizona. This club is for all members. Please pitch in and help us make this a very active and enjoyable club. We really need places to meet and tour. Bruce Sandburg mentioned he would set up something in and around Benson . Maybe sometime in February or March.

I think it is looking good so far. Lancaster in September. Grand Canyon Caverns in the end of October. Party at Mike and Violet's in November or December. Richard's event sometime in January along with the Southern Arizona Chapter dinner in Tucson also in January and our Zone Meet in May. L00000KING GOOOD!
